The innovative Bellini Chair from U.S. furniture company Heller Inc. recently captured Italy’s most prestigious design award. The chair, designed by Italian designer Mario Bellini, received the Compasso d’Oro ADI in the furniture category. In presenting The Bellini Chair with the top honor, The Italian Association of Industrial Designers said, “Comfortable, easy on the eye, and offering value for money, this chair is the outcome of an ongoing search harnessing premier design skills. Focusing on making the most of a sublimely innovative material, the designer has come up with a configuration which lends itself to myriad options.” The award was presented in Milan on October 15, 2001.The Bellini Chair has already been bought by the Museum of Modern Art in New York for its cafe; and by the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. It is also in the Metropolitan Museum’s collection of modern design. Since its 1998 launch, the Bellini Chair has garnered a host of awards, including the 1999 ID Annual Design Review Design Distinction Award, the 1999 Bronze IDEA Industrial design Excellence Award from the Industrial Designers Society of America, and the Good Design Award from the Chicago Athenaeum.Abitare hailed the Bellini Chair for its simplicity, low cost, elegance and versatility, called it “an all-time classic that will be hard to beat.” Interni declared the Bellini Chair as “one of the most intelligent chairs in the world…a truly universal chair.”

From the International Press about The Bellini Chair“One of the most intelligent chairs in the world…Mario Bellini has designed a truly universal chair, for the home, for contracting, for offices..” – Interni

“…an all-time classic that will be hard to beat.” – Abitare

“…a stunning measure of seating comfort.” – MD

“Comfortable, easy on the eye, and offering value for money, this chair is the outcome of an ongoing search harnessing premier design skills. Focusing on making the most of a sublimely innovative material, the designer has come up with a configuration which lends itself to myriad options.” – Compasso d’Oro award, Italian Association of Industrial Designers

“Sir Terence Conran nominated the Bellini chair for Heller as one of the all-time intelligently designed pieces of furniture. ‘For $80, you have a piece of sculpture in your home,’ Sir Terence said. In fact, he has the Mario Bellini-designed seat, which is made from injection molded plastic, in his London office.” – The New York Times

“Is there such a thing as an instant classic? We think it may be Mario Bellini’s design for Heller…The Bellini Chair distills the form to its essence and has garnered five design awards through the late 1990’s. More than just beautiful, it’s exceptionally comfortable, sturdy, and inexpensive. It’s also easy to clean and stack. Such a rare combination of virtues makes this chair wonderfully versatile. Itís tough enough to withstand rough use in a fast-paced restaurant, while elegant enough to flatter a sophisticated design studio or home … Heller’s Bellini Chair is sublime in both form and function…a modern icon.” – Design Within Reach

“It is like a sculpture cast in the finest mould…the shape of the chair is self-explanatory, and sitting is believing. The Bellini Chair is a no-problem chair, for use at home, in the office, outdoors. It can be moved with ease (it weighs 3.4 kg) and stacked if necessary. It will cost the price of an ordinary, unpretentious, anonymous chair. And for a designer we believe that is the best of compliments.” – Domus

“…they’re elegant.” – Architect Michael Graves, Wall Street Journal
